The client

The British Institute of Interior Design is the pre-eminent professional organisation for interior designers in the UK. Thier growing national and international membership represents both the commercial and residential sectors, from heritage to cutting edge. They are the only professional organisation for interior designers which has been granted the prestigious and rare accolade of Institute status by the Minister of State as the pre-eminent body in its field.

The brief

This was the third website we have built for BIID during our relationship with the institute and the second in partnership with Peter & Paul. Each site has required different capabilities to supplement the different stages of their growth. In the latest iteration we sought to deliver a reliable and efficient bespoke multi-user member management system. This would allow members their own customised profile pages with the ability to create subpages in the vein of a portfolio.

Although, there is much more to BIID than just profile pages for their members, there are a wide range of other duties which the website had to perform. These include a directory and referral system, whereby project specs could be posted and connections between designers and suppliers could be strengthened.

BIID also runs CPD courses for its members and separating the different aspects of the site had to be achieved through a clear navigation and strong call to actions.

The response

In 2009 BIID appointed Peter & Paul to work on their brand identity as they moved from an association to an institute. We worked alongside Peter & Paul to develop a consistent look and feel for the website as well as taking into consideration user requirements and best practice optimisation techniques.

The website showcases an ergonomic design and user-friendly layout. Crisp, high-definition images flow down the page, foregrounding members’ projects on the site, whilst clear drop-down menus lend themselves to straightforward navigation. Functionality and navigation were our priority, Peter & Paul’s designs for the website were simple and strong, guiding users around the site clearly and leaving plenty of space for members’ work to take centre stage.

Benefits of the new interface for BIID members include access to an extended profile. Members can now upload an image to customise their profile and showcase their work, whilst Industry Partners are able to add a logo to their page. The new profile design serves as a convenient point of reference for members to verify their category of Institute membership and relevant expiry dates.

Further new features include an updated BIID blog and a Supplier Directory separated into divisions, making it simpler to navigate and quicker to find what you are looking for. The website’s Members’ Area has been similarly redesigned, allowing members to view referrals in a clearer format, as well as respond to them faster. In addition, an automated jobs noticeboard regularly updates on the website with information about current available positions and projects.

BIID events and CPDs have been seamlessly merged on the new site with the CPD provider directory and exhibitions diary to create one calendar interface. Every event in the designers’ calendar can now be found conveniently in one place.

We enjoy assisting in the evolutionary journey a business makes, perhaps from its earliest days to its current position.

From a technical perspective we built the website using Ruby on Rails and integrated it with BIID’s own in-house membership management systems. This flexibility is reflective of our approach as an agency; we want the technology to be shaped on how the client wants their website to perform, not the other way around.

We like to think the evolution of BIID from association to institute and those years in between showcase our flexibility as an agency. We are all about the concept of ‘bespoke’ and always look to strategise our project to align with where you’re at as a business. This fluid approach also allows us to rescale projects more efficiently as you continue to grow and want more from us as your design and digital agency.

CORE are able to communicate complex technical concepts in a clear, friendly and ‘plain English’ way which has been invaluable in the build and ongoing development of our website.
