Has Twitter ruined their own USP by doubling their character count?
November 2017 has seen Twitter, the micro-blogging site with 330 million monthly active users, roll out its latest update and double the character count for all of its users to 280 from the original 140. In this blog we ask the question; is this rollout Twitter listening to it’s customers or have they ruined what sets Twitter aside from other social media platforms?
Within the original 140 Twitter character limit, it is argued that people were forced to be creative and inventive with their words, and had to write concisely to portray a message within a restricted allowance. Now that Twitter has doubled the limit, has it made its users lazy and eliminated the need for creativity? J. K. Rowling certainly thinks so...
Twitter’s product manager Aliza Rosen stated in a blog post: "We are making this change after listening and observing a problem our global community was having (it wasn't easy enough to Tweet!), studying data to understand how we could improve, trying it out, and listening to your feedback."
It isn't new news that Twitter has struggled to keep up with its competitor platforms, but you have to give them credit for adapting their channel to keep up with the needs of its customers. It is reported that one of the biggest reasons that MySpace failed was because of its failure to adapt and appeal to its market, so fingers crossed that Twitter will not follow this same path and the increase of character limit will satisfy its users and the platform will keep afloat!
Time will tell how this new rollout will affect the social platform, maybe it is the change that Twitter needed to keep up with its competitors, or maybe the change will drive users away from what made Twitter, Twitter.
