The client

The Old Custom House in Penarth features two notable dining establishments, La Marina and El Puerto. The two restaurants are owned and run by the same organisation but there are subtle differences between the two experiences. El Puerto being formal dining and a function venue, while La Marina is more relaxed and informal. They both share the same passion for great food and excellent wine (they boast some of the most exclusive wines outside of London).

The brief

It was Core’s task to ensure the new website presented both restaurants (through one website) to their best advantage, accentuating the proprietors commitment to high levels of customer service and the quality and provenance of the food and wine they serve. In addition to this we were also asked to create an easy to use (and manage) online booking/reservation request system.

Our response

As with all of the projects we undertake, it is first important to establish what the focus of each site is and the aims and expectancies from a user point of view. For La Marina and El Puerto restaurants it was vital to establish, in the eyes of a user, its status as a source of fine dining and quality wines as well as it’s prime location with stunning views and easy access to Penarth Marina and Cardiff Bay. With this in mind we commissioned the talents of our friends at Magenta Photography to capture some truly wonderful imagery of the restaurants. This not only provides gorgeous visuals for the site but also helps to tell their story and further strengthen the brand.

To compliment the visual design we also decided upon a clear, one page presentation style for the content. We implemented a navigation bar at the top of the site which follows the user down the page and overlayed modal popups to emphasise different pieces of content. Blocks of content also feature a prominent call-to-action, with our understanding that there should be a clear conversion funnel in terms of leading a potential customer to make a booking.

Another aspect of the site we were keen to explore was its integration with various social channels which play a massive role in terms of user trust. The site both uses quotes from and links out to Facebook and Linkedin, providing a secondary voice to the site and encouraging a principle of conversation between restaurant and customer.

We are extremely happy with the results Core achieved. Customers old and new have remarked on the quality of the website and in particular the ease of using the new booking system.
