The client

Based in Cardiff Bay, Techniquest is the UK’s longest established science centre, educating and entertaining over 4 million visitors in the 31 years since their founding. Working closely with local schools, Techniquest has been a central part of the formative years of much of the children in South Wales, allowing children to gain that connection between science as a concept and it in action!

The brief

Despite Techniquest’s huge popularity as a fun and educational trip out for young families, there was a desire to broaden their appeal in the hope of attracting a more varied visitor base. Moves had been made over the past few years to introduce programmes with more of a focus on teenagers and young adults, including the ‘After Hours’ evenings. Techniquest wanted their new website to reflect this move, while also acknowledging that their current site looked dated and was not doing them justice as one of the premier visitor attractions in South Wales.

The response

In terms of visual treatments, our design team were keen to ensure that Techniquest’s ‘brand’ was carried over to the new site while its ‘identity’ was refreshed. This distinction between a ‘brand’ and ‘identity is key for us. An organisation’s brand encompasses the emotion and feeling attached to it by their customer base while an identity is the visual representation their customers will see e.g. logo, icons, imagery. In Techniquest’s case, their brand was very strong but their identity needed tweaking to achieve their goals.

Moving away from the primary colour base of the existing site, we proposed visuals which imbued freshness and vitality. This also extended to the imagery used on the site where we looked to provide a higher level of quality and variety, while still acknowledging that young children were still a key target visitor base.

Of course, good design is not just how it looks but also how it works. So, much effort was also made to simplify a navigation which had grown far too cluttered on the old site, affecting key user journeys which we had established with the Techniquest team. URLs were also optimised as previous strings contained extraneous numbers which would have had a detrimental effect on sharing. It’s these kind of small technical updates that can set you up for big gains in future years.

At a time when we were looking to reposition ourselves in our audience's minds, the collaborative approach Core brought to the project was enormously beneficial. The resulting website has absolutely achieved the aims set out at the beginning.
